Title

The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II

Description

The top photograph depicts red, white and blue bunting on the breezy morning of 2 June, just placed--fearlessly--around the top of St. Petrock's Church's tower by Churchwardens, Marion Jeffrey and Kate Hart. In the preceding weeks, variations of this bunting were appearing throughout the village of Timberscombe, as they were over all of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

The occasion was the upcoming celebrations marking the 70th year of the reign of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II--the longest of any British monarch and the first Platinum Jubilee in the country's history. Officially the anniversary date was the 6th of February 2022 but the appointed days of celebration were Thursday to Sunday, the 2nd to the 5th of June.

The Timberscombe Jubilee Fete and Street Party was held on Friday, with a two-day exhibition beginning on Thursday at St. Petrock's Church. In cases around the nave, chancel and south aisle were displays of rarely shown documents gathered from where they are normally stored at the Somerset Heritage Centre by Marion Jeffrey, many focussing on matters royal but others concerning day to day events of the past---when a birth or wedding certificate was rendered as a piece of art. Special stand-up displays featured royal memorabilia loaned by people from the village, ranging from coronation cups to original copies of media coverage covering every decade of Elizabeth's reign, well arranged by Sue O'Connell. The second photograph shows young viewers looking at the St. Petrock's History Group display of Timberscombe photographs of celebrations, including royal visits, as well as previous coronation and jubilee events, assembled by Tom Sperling. Other displays included recently discovered sections of the German Junkers bomber that was shot down over Timberscombe on the 18th of May 1943; the "VILLAGE HERITAGE BOOK", including 25 treasured pages of original photographs, artwork and historic items compiled by the Women's Institute in 1975; and albums lent by Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff, whose 32 years in the Royal Navy included command on the Royal Yacht, HMY BRITANNIA. After retiring to live in Timberscombe, Ian was awarded the CBE in 2010 by the Queen. Original coronation music recorded on the day, was offered by Gabrielle Horrobin, and was played throughout both days.

A highlight of the exhibition were portraits of Queen Elizabeth, created by the children of Timberscombe School, including a giant image of the Queen, glimpsed in the third photograph. Taking a break while preparing the exhibition are Wendy Hellewell and John Gratton, revered veterans of Timberscombe and St. Petrock's events. Yet even these pros had never prepared for a Platinum Jubilee.

Beginning at 2 PM on Friday was the Jubilee Fete and Street Party. Quickly people of all ages came together at booths of crafts, books and gifts, a bouncy obstacle course and naturally, tombula and raffles. A Fancy Dress Parade for village children wound through the festivities. Crowned King was Jack Dymond and the Queen was Persephone (Percy) Lloyd. They are both pictured in the 4th photograph. Percy had to remove her fantastic tall and red crown, made by herself and her mum, Flo Lloyd, to don her award crown presented by judges, Sheila Ridd and Joyce Smith. They both deserved an award for making their choices among some worthy fancy dress competitors. This photograph was taken by Percy's father, Dan Lloyd. Later the Lloyds walked up to the church exhibition where the young Queen saw Tom Sperling (her neighbour) and ordered his head be cut off.

Pictured behind the new King and Queen was the renowned band, Rough Justice, in great form and keeping a crowd dancing and happy. Across the road from the band was The Lion Inn, open all day---also keeping people in good spirits.

Perhaps the greatest stimulant of the day was just to the right of Rough Justice, the Jubilee Big Lunch, filling all of Jubilee Terrace (its name on any day), with long tables topped with delicious food and lots of cake (as well as other sweets). Martin Booth of The Knapp had advocated for the street-long dining table and a committee including Sophie Melrose, Barry Melrose, Sarah Campbell, Carl Farmer, Kayleigh Campbell-Farmer, Jessica (Jess) Plumridge, Matt Davis and Allan Sutton, brought it to fruition. Special mention goes to committee members, Megan and Laurence Peuleve, who operated an ongoing barbeque situated on the left side of The Lion Inn. This 5th photograph was taken by Gabrielle Horrobin.

It wasn't just the food or even the honouring of Queen Elizabeth that made this special. This Jubilee was held in the middle of the third year of the Covid 19-Pandemic. For many of the participants, especially the more senior, this was a first face-to-face outing since early 2019, a time of seclusion and for some, ultimate loss. This was an event of gathering, not any sort of a complete victory, but a much needed day of things getting better and finally being together.

And the fun of being somewhat ludicrous. The 6th photograph depicts the fiercely contested doughnut-eating contest, where the doughnuts hung strung from a line and the participants, with hands at their side, vied to be the first to devour their respective doughnut. There were two contests, one for adults and one for children. They were both for kids!

Millions of people around the world celebrated Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee, with their eyes on London looking to see the 96-year-old monarch. She opened the proceedings but ominously had to cancel attending events in the middle period. Yet at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant on Sunday at the Mall, Queen Elizabeth appeared, looking well and seemingly enjoying herself. Of course, the ending was inevitable, and almost as a seasonal bookend, the Queen died toward the end of summer at Balmoral on 8th September 2022. This entry was prepared to go public on Monday, the 19th of September, the day of the royal funeral. It would be a sad day for many and an historic day for all but earlier in the summer, the Queen threw a good party.
