Title

The Timberscombe Cricket Club on Tour in Devon, c. 1970's

Description

A colour photograph of members of the Timberscombe Cricket Club, donated in 2020 by Maurice Huxtable who is the centre player in the centre row. Mr. Huxtable recalled that they were "touring down in Devon". The photograph was not dated but may be in the later 1970's. Several of the men are seen in a Timberscombe Cricket Club photograph at SP-177, which is dated 1968 and it is fair (if not sporting) to say they could be ten years older here.

Perhaps another sign of time passing is that Dudley Huxtable is seen here, kneeling on the right end of the front row-- wearing a dark suit and not cricket kit, as he had been photographed in over the previous decades. He was born, named Dudley Frank, in 1911 to Frank and Eva (nee Buttle) Huxtable (1), who lived on Brook Street, at the bend where the road veers southward toward the village centre. The house was named Pump Cottage at the time of this photograph and later became Tiki Cottage. However it was known by many simply as the Huxtable house, as their family had occupied it at least since the 1843 Tithe Map of Timberscombe (and would continue to do so until 2021). Dudley married Grace Irene Cook, originally from Wiltshire and they became the parents of Maurice in 1932--his middle name is Dudley (2). His father settled his family into No. 3 Council House (3), across (and a bit to the east) the road from the house where he grew up, one of a group of ten new structures partly built by himself and his father (4). In later years, this cluster of houses were renamed Meadow View. Dudley died on 19 November 1994 and was buried with Grace at St. Petrock's, the parish church of Timberscombe (5).

At the time of this photograph, Maurice Huxtable worked as a tractor and Land Rover mechanic at the Luttrell Arms Garage in Dunster, a position he held for 34 years (6). He married Mary E. Palfry of Luxborough in 1952, raising three children, Marion, Maureen and Melvyn Ian. Mary Huxtable died in July 2002 and is buried at St. Petrock's (7). When donating this photograph, Maurice lived at Ye Old Malthouse, also on Brook Street but at the southern end.

Wearing the white coat of the umpire, standing on the left end of the back row is Frederick (Fred) James Clatworthy. Like Dudley and Maurice, he was a lifelong resident of Timberscombe. Born in 1905 to John and Bessie (nee Quick) Clatworthy, he was raised with his sister, Evelyn May Clatworthy, born in 1908, at Cott Cottage, southwest of Timberscombe (8). (In 1931 Evelyn married George Elford and lived at Ford Cottage.) Fred became a mason (9) but also like Dudley and Maurice, was a constant on the football and cricket fields of the village. SP-167 is a photograph that depicts Fred Clatworthy and Dudley Huxtable as young cricketers in 1928. Mr. Clatworthy passed away in 1991 (10).

Maurice Huxtable remembered the young man to the right of Fred Clatworthy as Alan Davis. The player to his right is not identified. In the centre of the row is Michael Plenty. Michael John Plenty was born in May 1944 and married Jeanette M. Mears of Dorset in 1970. They later lived on Paganel Road in Minehead and he passed away in June 2011 (11). To Mr. Plenty's right is John Leatherby. The two men at the right end of the back row are recalled by Maurice Huxtable as "Mr. Saunders from Exford" and the last gentleman was a "School Master".

Seated to the left of Maurice is Robin Dyer of Timberscombe, likely born in 1942 and who married Penelope Bosley in 1966 (12) . The gentleman to his right was identified here as Harold Stephens. He seems to be the same cricketer identified as Henry Stephens from Cutcombe at SP-177. He is possibly Harold Randall Stephens, born 10 January 1948 in North Yorkshire, who married Wendy Jeffreys in Taunton in 1967 and passed away 5 December 2013 in Somerset (13). On the left end of the front row is George Stephens who was identified in 1968 as from Wheddon Cross and between him and Dudley Huxtable is Ray Down, remembered as working as a butcher in Minehead (14). All four of these men are likely seen at SP-177. At this writing, the details on these fellows, as well as the others players, remain sketchy and hopefully will be expanded in due course.
